Antonio Conte questioned about ‘crazy’ Chelsea FC transfer
Former Irish defender Kevin Kilbane is shocked Chelsea FC allowed Michy Batshuayi to leave on loan to Dortmund in January
Kevin Kilbane has branded Chelsea’s decision to allow Michy Batshuayi to leave on loan as “crazy”.
The Belgium international completed a temporary switch to Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund on transfer deadline day.
The 24-year-old was deemed surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge despite his impressive goals-to-minute ratio.
Batshuayi scored twice in Chelsea’s 3-0 win over Premier League opponents Newcastle United in the FA Cup fourth round last month.
Antonio Conte, though, has appeared reluctant to use Batshuayi despite Chelsea’s lack of options up front following Diego Costa’s exit.
Indeed, Alvaro Morata has struggled in front of goal in recent months due to a lack of confidence and some apparent fitness issues.
Chelsea did manage to sign Olivier Giroud in a reported £21m deal from Arsenal on transfer deadline day.
Former Irish defender Kilbane admitted he was bemused by Chelsea’s bizarre decision to allow the Belgian striker to leave.
“Batshuayi going. Why? Yes they’ve got Giroud in there now with Morata out,” Kilbane told Irish radio station Newstalk.
“Letting him go. It’s crazy. Antonio Conte obviously doesn’t fancy him.”
Batshuayi scored two goals and made one assist on his Dortmund debut in a 3-2 win against FC Cologne on Friday night.
Chelsea are in the Champions League last 16 where the west London side will take on Spanish giants Barcelona.
The Blues will also face Championship side Hull City in the FA Cup fifth round later this month.
