Frank Lampard: What I really think about new Chelsea FC signing Olivier Giroud
The Chelsea FC legend admits he is surprised the Blues were willing to offer Olivier Giroud a short-term contract
Frank Lampard has admitted his surprise that Chelsea FC have signed Olivier Giroud on a short-term deal.
The France international completed a deadline day move to the defending Premier League champions from bitter London rivals Arsenal.
Giroud has signed an 18-month deal with the title holders after the target striker called time on his five and a half seasons at The Emirates.
The 31-year-old has a decent record in the Premier League following a return of 73 goals in 180 top-flight appearances.
Chelsea FC were linked with a number of different strikers in the January transfer window, including former Manchester City forward Edin Dzeko.
Former Blues midfielder Lampard believes Giroud will be a good short-term fix even if the club’s record goal-scorer isn’t convinced about the details of the transfer.
“It’s a short deal and I don’t know the ins and outs of that,” Lampard told BT Sport Premier League Tonight on Wednesday night. “It’s not a typical Chelsea deal.”
“The last few years have been about younger players and longer contracts. Here they’ve gone for more of a short thing.
“We know what we’re going to get from Giroud so we’re happy for that period of time.”
Chelsea FC lost 3-0 to Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night to leave the Blues in fourth place in the table and a mere two points ahead of Tottenham Hotspur.
The west London side will take on La Liga giants Barcelona in the Champions League round of 16 next month as Antonio Conte looks to win the competition for the first time as manager.
The Blues will take on Hull City in the FA Cup fifth round on 16 February.
