New Chelsea FC signing Olivier Giroud sends message to Blues supporters
The new Chelsea signing opens up about his move across the English capital to the defending Premier League champions
Olivier Giroud has expressed his delight to complete a move to one of the Premier League’s “biggest” teams.
The France international completed a reported £21m move to Chelsea FC from their bitter London rivals Arsenal on transfer deadline day on Wednesday.
Giroud has signed an 18-month contract with the defending Premier League champions to make the controversial switch across the English capital.
The 31-year-old found his first-team opportunities limited at the Gunners in the current campaign following the arrival of his France team-mate Alexandre Lacazette.
Arsenal spent a club-record £56m fee on Borussia Dortmund forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to push Giroud further down the pecking order at The Emirates.
The new Chelsea FC signing will be tasked with rivalling Alvaro Morata for a starting spot in Antonio Conte’s team for the remainder of the 2017-18 season.
Giroud spoke of his pride at signing for the defending Premier League champions following his deadline day switch.
“Chelsea is one of the biggest teams in the Premier League,” Giroud told Chelsea FC’s website.
“They have won maybe the most trophies in the last six or seven years. It’s a massive club and I am proud to sign for Chelsea, and I’m looking forward to playing.”
Chelsea FC signed England international Ross Barkley in a £15m deal from Premier League rivals Everton at the start of January.
The west London side completed a reported £17m swoop to sign AS Roma defender Emerson Palmieri on the penultimate day of the transfer window.
