Andy Townsend has urged Chelsea FC to keep Eden Hazard at Stamford Bridge for as long as possible and to avoid selling another key player.

The defending Premier League champions allowed Serbia international Nemanja Matic to move to title rivals Manchester United in a £40m deal back in August.

Less than a month later, Diego Costa completed a loan move to Atletico Madrid with view to a permanent switch to los Rojiblancos at the end of the season.

Both Costa and Matic were important players in Chelsea FC’s title successes in 2015 and 2017, and the title holders have struggled without the key duo this term.

Hazard’s future has been a source of debate in recent weeks amid talk of potential interest from La Liga giants Real Madrid ahead of the summer transfer window.

The Belgium international has undisputedly been Chelsea FC’s best player over the past four seasons seasons at Stamford Bridge.

Former Chelsea FC defender Townsend told the Blues not to be in a hurry to sell their best players.

“Chelsea should learn from the Matic experience,” Townsend told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“They shouldn’t be in too much of a rush to allow their best players to leave. They have to make it difficult for them.”

Chelsea FC finished seven points clear of their closest title rivals Tottenham Hotspur last season.

Hazard scored 16 goals in 36 games in the Premier League campaign to help the Blues to win the top-flight crown for the second time in three seasons.
