Steven Gerrard: What Jurgen Klopp told me about Liverpool FC star
The Liverpool FC legend reveals what Jurgen Klopp told him about Roberto Firmino when he met the German coach for the first time
Steven Gerrard has revealed that Jurgen Klopp raved about Roberto Firmino when the former Liverpool FC captain first met the German manager.
The Brazil international moved to Liverpool FC in a £29m deal from Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim in the 2015 summer transfer window under Brendan Rodgers.
Gerrard didn’t play alongside Firmino following his Anfield exit in 2015 but the retired England international is working as Liverpool FC’s Under-21 coach.
The South American scored his 21st goal of the 2017-18 season in a 5-0 win against Porto in the first leg of the Champions League last-16 clash on Wednesday night.
Firmino has been in scintillating form in recent weeks following a return of five goals and three assists in his last 10 appearances in all competitions.
Former Liverpool FC skipper Gerrard revealed Klopp’s gushing praise for Firmino when he first encountered the ex-Borussia Dortmund coach.
“He’s a top player and I know he’s the first name on the team sheet,” Gerrard told BT Sport.
“When I first met Klopp he was waxing lyrical about Firmino.
“He loves him, he said he’d run through a wall for him. He’s the type of player you want in a war.”
Firmino has scored 44 times in 127 games in all competitions over the past two and a half seasons at Anfield.
The Reds forward is still waiting to win his first piece of silverware at Liverpool FC.
Firmino was part of the Liverpool FC team that lost to Sevilla and Manchester City in the Europa League and League Cup finals.
