Steven Gerrard has sympathised with the added pressure on Liverpool FC captain Jordan Henderson.

The Reds skipper has been the subject of criticism from Liverpool FC supporters and some Premier League pundits over the past couple of season.

Henderson was handed the unenviable task of succeeding Gerrard in the captain’s role at Liverpool FC following the legend’s departure in 2015.

The 27-year-old started his career at Sunderland as a box-to-box midfielder and was allowed to flourish under Brendan Rodgers.

However, current Liverpool FC boss Jurgen Klopp has used Henderson in a holding role following the departure of Lucas Leiva to Lazio last summer.

Henderson’s instincts are to get forward and to support Liverpool FC’s attack but the skipper has been tasked with maintaining the balance in the Reds midfield.

His performances has attracted some criticism, while the England international has struggled with injuries over the past two or three seasons.

Former Liverpool FC skipper Gerrard sent a direct message to Henderson about the pressure of being the club’s captain.

“The armband comes with big pressure and big responsibility, so Jordan probably gets judged differently to every other player – I did when I played,” Gerrard told the club’s website.

“You don’t see that as being unfair, you just have to take it on the chin.”

Liverpool FC signed Henderson in a £20m deal from Sunderland in the 2011 summer transfer window.

The Reds will take on FC Porto in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 clash in Portugal next week.
