Jamie Carragher couldn’t resist a cheeky dig at Manchester United after Liverpool FC were 2-0 winners at Southampton on Sunday evening.

The Red Devils made the trip to Newcastle United earlier on Sunday as Jose Mourinho looked to secure his first win in seven attempts at St James’ Park.

However, Matt Ritchie’s second-half goal helped Newcastle to secure a 1-0 win over Manchester United and lift the Magpies out of the relegation zone.

Former Liverpool FC boss Rafael Benitez, who coached Carragher for six seasons, was responsible for masterminding the shock result.

The Reds seized their chance to hoist themselves back up to third spot and within two points of Manchester United in Sunday’s late kick-off at St Mary’s.

Roberto Firmino broke the deadlock in the sixth minute with a clinical finish before the Brazilian produced a world-class assist to allow Mohamed Salah to make it 2-0 before half-time.

Former Liverpool FC defender Carragher took to Twitter to celebrate a great afternoon for Reds supporters.

Carragher wrote on his Twitter page: “If Carlsberg did Super Sunday’s! #NEWMU #SOULIV.”

Liverpool FC will return to Champions League action on Wednesday night when Jurgen Klopp’s side make the trip to Portugal side FC Porto in the round of 16.

The Reds are four points clear of fifth-placed Chelsea FC.
