Steven Gerrard: Liverpool FC are a better team with 27-year-old
The Liverpool FC legend issues his backing for under-pressure Reds captain Jordan Henderson
Steven Gerrard is adamant that Liverpool FC are a better team with Jordan Henderson in the starting XI.
The England international has struggled with injury problems during the 2017-18 season to limit his game time.
Henderson has started 17 of Liverpool FC’s 26 games in the Premier League this term with a return of one goal and one assist.
Liverpool FC’s midfield players have come in for some criticism in recent months given Jurgen Klopp’s leaky defence this term.
Indeed, the German head coach has been urged to sign a holding midfielder to protect his vulnerable back four in the summer.
Henderson has been used in a defensive role in the middle of the park despite the 27-year-old’s lack of experience as a specialised holding midfield player.
But former Liverpool FC captain Gerrard believes Henderson has an important role to play in Klopp’s team.
“I think we’re a better team with him in the XI, I think he brings an awful lot to the game that I appreciate as a midfielder,” Gerrard told the club’s website.
“It’s one of these things, from game to game people change their opinions, it’s just part and parcel of being a player in this day and age with the social media and the attention on every single position.
“Players just have to accept it.”
Liverpool FC signed Henderson in a £20m deal from Sunderland in the 2011 summer transfer window during Kenny Dalglish’s second spell in charge at Anfield.
The Reds have reached a £48m agreement with RB Leipzig to sign box-to-box midfielder Naby Keita at the end of the 2017-18 season.
Liverpool FC are in third place in the Premier League table.
