Steven Gerrard believes Jurgen Klopp needs to keep Liverpool in the Champions League in the coming seasons before securing a trophy “sooner rather than later”.

The Reds have been in excellent form in recent weeks to ease pressure on the former Borussia Dortmund head coach.

Indeed, Liverpool FC have won two of their last three Premier League games since successive losses to Swansea City and West Brom.

The Merseyside outfit were resounding 5-0 winners against Porto in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 clash on Wednesday night.

Liverpool FC are on the brink of the Champions League quarter-finals, while the Reds are in third place and two points behind Manchester United.

While most Liverpool FC supporters are enamored with Klopp, the German has a number of detractors given his lack of silverware over the past one and a half seasons.

The club’s former captain Gerrard outlined what Klopp needs to achieve at the Anfield outfit to win over all the Liverpool FC fans.

“I think [to win over the Liverpool fans completely] first and foremost he has to keep Liverpool in the Champions League and keep finishing in the top four positions,” Gerrard told BT Sport. “And then try and deliver a trophy.

“The club is about winning trophies and sooner rather than later there will be the expectation that he has to deliver one.”

Liverpool FC lost to Manchester City and Sevilla in the League Cup and Europa League finals under Klopp in 2016.

The Reds finished in fourth place in Klopp’s first full season in charge at the Anfield outfit.
