Jurgen Klopp responds to Jamie Carragher’s claim about new Liverpool FC signing
The Liverpool FC boss replies to Jamie Carragher's suggestion that Virgil van Dijk needs to lose weight
Jurgen Klopp has dismissed Jamie Carragher’s suggestion that new Liverpool FC signing Virgil van Dijk needs to lose weight.
The Reds signed the Netherlands international in a club record £75m deal from Premier League rivals Southampton in the January transfer window.
Liverpool FC made the 26-year-old the most expensive defender in the world in order to secure the Dutch centre-half’s signature amid interest from their rivals.
Van Dijk scored the winner on his debut in a 2-1 victory over derby rivals Everton in the FA Cup third round at Anfield last month.
Liverpool FC lost 1-0 to Premier League strugglers Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium on Van Dijk’s top-flight debut for his new employers.
Klopp left Van Dijk on the bench for Liverpool FC’s 3-0 victory over Huddersfield Town in the Premier League on Tuesday night.
Former Reds defender Carragher claimed that Van Dijk was a little overweight after the Dutchman missed pre season at Southampton following a lengthy injury lay-off.
However, Liverpool FC boss Klopp rubbished the legend’s suggestion and underlined Van Dijk’s weight is not an issue.
“I’m sure Jamie needs to lose a little bit of weight,” Klopp told his pre-match media conference at Melwood on Friday.
“I know it’s not the case for Virgil. He’s a big tall lad that’s how it is. We have the best nutrition department – no one has come to me and said that.
“Being fit means having more muscle than anything else. It’s not an issue.”
Liverpool FC will take on top-six rivals Tottenham Hotspur in their next Premier League game at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.
