Hamann names the Liverpool FC player who needs to improve after Coutinho exit
The Liverpool FC legend wants Sadio Mane to step up at Anfield following Philippe Coutinho's departure to Barcelona
Dietmar Hamann has challenged Sadio Mane to accept more responsibility in the Liverpool FC team following Philippe Coutinho’s January exit.
The Reds sold the Brazil international in a reported £142m deal to La Liga giants Barcelona in the January transfer window following months of speculation.
Coutinho’s exit has a left void in the Liverpool FC side after Jurgen Klopp opted against reinvesting the Brazilian’s transfer fee in a new forward.
Summer signing Mohamed Salah has scored 19 times in 25 games in the Premier League this season following his £39m switch from Serie A giants AS Roma back in July.
Mane made a brilliant start to the current campaign with three goals in three games to prompt Jamie Carragher to name the Senegal forward as the Reds’ key player.
However, his sending off in a 5-0 loss to Premier League leaders Manchester City derailed his season before Mane suffered a knee injury.
But former Liverpool FC midfielder Hamann is hoping Mane can step out of Salah’s shadow and shine in the final months of the 2017-18 season.
“With Salah bursting onto the scene I think Mane is really playing second fiddle at the moment, and I think come towards the end of the season I think you need more from Mane because you can’t always rely on Salah’s goals,” Hamann told Tag Heuer.
“I think Mane is the player who really has to improve in the next few weeks.”
Liverpool FC signed Mane in a £30m deal from Southampton in the 2016 summer transfer window.
The Reds were 3-0 winners against Huddersfield Town on Wednesday night to end a two-game losing run.
