Rio Ferdinand: What I really think about Liverpool FC signing
The Manchester United legend wants Virgil van Dijk to become a leader in the Liverpool FC team
Rio Ferdinand has challenged Virgil van Dijk to become the leader of the Liverpool FC team.
The Netherlands international completed a £75m move to Liverpool FC from Southampton in the club record deal in the January transfer window.
The Reds made Van Dijk the most expensive defender in the world after the Merseyside outfit finally secured their long-term target.
The 26-year-old scored the winner on his Anfield debut in a 2-1 victory over Everton in the FA Cup third round back in January.
Van Dijk endured a sticky start to his Premier League career in a Liverpool FC shirt following mistakes in a 1-0 loss to Swansea and 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur.
However, the Dutch defender was imperious in Liverpool FC’s resounding 5-0 win over Porto in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 clash on Wednesday night.
Ferdinand, who regarded as one of the greatest centre-halves of the Premier League era, believes Liverpool FC need Van Dijk to become a talismanic figure at Anfield.
“He is easy on the eye in terms of getting on the ball,” Ferdinand told BT Sport.
“He’s very comfortable. But what I want to see more of is that defensive nous that he’s got. That dominant figure that he has to become.
“In this league you’ve got to be dominant and aggressive and push people around. He’s got to become the leader of this term.”
Liverpool FC are in third place in the Premier League table and two points behind Manchester United in the top-four race.
The Reds will return to top-flight action against West Ham United in the Premier League on Saturday 24 February.
