Jamie Carragher: Liverpool FC signing needs to lose some weight
Jamie Carragher discusses Liverpool FC's signing of Virgil van Dijk from Southampton this winter
Jamie Carragher believes that Virgil van Dijk needs to get fit and “lose weight” following his transfer to Liverpool FC from Southampton last month.
The Reds concluded a big-money £75m deal to sign the Netherlands international from Southampton as Jurgen Klopp moved quickly to bolster his defensive options at Anfield.
Van Dijk enjoyed a debut to remember for the Reds when he scored the winner in the 2-1 victory over Everton in the third round of the FA Cup last month.
However, he has struggled with injury problems in recent weeks and will now be hoping to prove his fitness in the coming games as he bids to help Liverpool FC finish in the top four.
And Carragher feels that Van Dijk will prove to be a quality signing for the Merseyside outfit as he looks to help the Reds enjoy a successful second half of the campaign.
Speaking on The Debate on Sky Sports, Carragher said: “The big difference is getting Van Dijk in. I think it will prove to be a great signing.
“It is a huge fee. He hasn’t hit the ground running. He looks like he needs to get a bit fit. He needs to lose a bit of weight.”
Liverpool FC are currently in third place in the Premier League table after their 3-0 win over Huddersfield Town in the top flight in midweek.
The Reds are now preparing for their crunch Premier League showdown against Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.
