Jurgen Klopp told Liverpool FC must make this key signing in the summer
Liverpool FC should try and bring in a new defensive midfielder in the summer, says Dietmar Hamann
Liverpool FC should look to bring in a new defensive midfielder in the summer transfer window, according to Dietmar Hamann.
The Reds completed the signing of Virgil van Dijk from Southampton last month as they moved fast to bolster their defensive options at Anfield.
The Netherlands defender will now be hoping to help the Reds shore up their back four as they target a top four finish in the Premier League in the second half of the season.
However, former Liverpool FC star Hamman feels that it is clear that the Reds are still in need of a quality defensive midfielder if they are to really challenge for the top honours in the coming seasons.
Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, Hamman said: “I think Van Dijk will improve them, I think he brings pace and a physical presence to the team but I think they lack a holding midfielder.
“I think they’ve lacked that holding midfielder for a while now so unless they bring in someone who really protects the back four.
“I think Van Dijk will improve them but not as much as I think they need to be improved to really challenge for titles on a consistent basis.”
Liverpool FC finished in fourth place in the Premier League and secured Champions League qualification in what was Jurgen Klopp’s first full campaign in charge at Anfield.
The Reds will take on FC Porto for a place in the Champions League quarter-finals later this month, with the European competition their last remaining hope of silverware this term.
Liverpool FC are still yet to win their first trophy since Klopp’s appointment at Anfield back in October 2015.
