Jamie Carragher: What I honestly think about Liverpool FC selling Philippe Coutinho
Jamie Carragher delivers his honest verdict on Liverpool FC's decision to sell Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona this winter
Jamie Carragher has criticised Liverpool FC for selling Philippe Coutinho in the January transfer window.
The Brazilian’s future had been a relentless source of speculation all season after he was heavily linked with a move to Barcelona in the summer but it didn’t go through.
Liverpool FC eventually opted to cash in on the 25-year-old playmaker last month as they brought in a £145m fee from Barcelona for his move to Camp Nou.
However, former Liverpool FC defender feels that the Reds should have held firm and kept Coutinho at Anfield until the end of the season at least, even if it meant missing out on some of the transfer fee.
Speaking on The Debate on Sky Sports, Carragher said: “Every Liverpool fan, including myself, thought when he stayed in the summer we knew he was going next season so we could enjoy him for another 12 months.
“Similar to Cristiano Ronaldo and Luis Suarez… to lose him mid-season is not good. Coutinho is not worth that fee. I would have taken £20m or £30m less in the summer to know Liverpool had him for the season.”
Liverpool FC did bolster their squad in the January transfer window with the signing of Virgil van Dijk from Southampton at the turn of the year.
Meanwhile, the Reds are currently preparing for their crunch Premier League clash against Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.
Jurgen Klopp’s men head into the game looking to build on their 3-0 win over Huddersfield Town in the top flight on Tuesday night, a result which lifted them up into third place in the Premier League table.
