Roy Keane takes swipe at ’embarrassing’ Liverpool FC after 5-0 Porto win
Roy Keane says Liverpool FC and Tottenham's lack of silverware in recent years is "embarrassing"
Roy Keane has labelled Liverpool FC’s failure to win a major trophy in recent seasons as “embarrassing” following their 5-0 thrashing of Porto in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
Sadio Mane scored a hat-trick and Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino both got on the score-sheet as Jurgen Klopp’s men took a giant stride towards the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
Liverpool FC are currently in third place in the Premier League table as they bid to try and get back into the Champions League spots for the second season running.
The Reds finished fourth last term under Klopp but they are still searching for their first major trophy since the German’s appointment back in October 2015.
Indeed, the Merseyside outfit have not lifted a trophy since their League Cup triumph back in 2012.
And former Manchester United star Keane has not been particularly impressed by both Tottenham and Liverpool FC’s lack of silverware in recent seasons.
Speaking on ITV Sport on Wednesday night, Keane said: “For a club the size of Liverpool and Tottenham, one trophy in ten years is I think pretty embarrassing.
“I know the Champions League has taken over now and the money behind it, but success for club like that is getting your hands on trophies.
“Clubs like Liverpool and Spurs should be able to qualify for the Champions League and win a League Cup or an FA Cup.
“These clubs with these squads should get to the knock-out stages of the Champions League and win an FA Cup or a League Cup as well. That should go hand in hand.”
Liverpool will return to Premier League action next weekend when they take on West Ham United at Anfield.
The Reds are third and just two points behind Manchester United as they look to finish as high as possible in the table.
