Steven Gerrard defends Jurgen Klopp over new Liverpool FC signing decision
Steven Gerrard explains why he's backing Jurgen Klopp's decision to continue tinkering with his Liverpool FC side
Steven Gerrard has defended Jurgen Klopp’s decision to rest Virgil van Dijk for Liverpool FC’s Premier League clash against Huddersfield on Tuesday night.
The £75m signing was left on the bench for the Premier League game as Klopp dropped the Netherlands international in the wake of the 3-2 loss to West Brom in the FA Cup last weekend.
Liverpool FC managed to claim a solid victory in the defender’s absence as they kept a clean sheet in the 3-0 win at the Liberty Stadium on Tuesday night.
Klopp’s decision to drop Van Dijk is sure to have raised some eyebrows amongst Liverpool FC fans considering how much they paid to sign him this month.
However, Gerrard believes that Klopp is right to keep rotating his team as he looks to keep them fresh in preparation for a crucial end to the season.
Speaking to BT Sport on Tuesday night, Gerrard said: “I think his players are getting used to it now.
“He’s been doing it for quite a while now, making changes every game. Last January when they had the poor month, players were playing a lot of minutes and he was getting criticism that he’s over-playing players.
“Now, with the rotation, I think he’s trying to keep them fresh for this stage of the season.
“I think he’s doing it so they benefit at the end of the season so they really push and nail a top-four place.”
Liverpool FC are currently in fourth place in the Premier League table as they bid to secure Champions League qualification for the second season running under Klopp.
The Reds will take on FC Porto in the last 16 of the Champions League later this month as they bid to reach the quarter-finals.
