Tottenham Hotspur should defend deep to limit the space for Liverpool FC duo Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah to exploit at Anfield on Sunday, according to Dietmer Hamann.

Spurs were impressive 2-0 winners against second-placed Manchester United at Wembley on Wednesday night thanks to Christian Eriksen’s 11-second opener before a Phil Jones own goal.

Tottenham are in fifth place in the Premier League table and a mere two points behind Chelsea following the west London side’s shock 3-0 loss to Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge mid-week.

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool FC side ended a two-game losing run courtesy of goals from Emre Can, Roberto Firmino and Salah in a comfortable 3-0 win against promoted side Huddersfield Town.

Salah has now scored 19 goals in 25 games in the Premier League this season, while Mane appears to be returning to form following his sensational goal in a 4-3 win against Manchester City last month.

Former Liverpool FC midfielder Hamann advised Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino that the most effective way to stop Salah and Mane is to defend deep.

“When Spurs do go away they like to press but then again, they are very flexible. When you play against a team with Salah and Mane, teams tend to defend a little bit deeper because you want to deny them space,” Hamann told Tag Heuer.

“If they haven’t got space to run into I think Mane and Salah are not quite as effective as they can be.”

Liverpool FC are in third place in the Premier League table after Chelsea’s surprise loss to Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge.

The Reds finished two places behind Tottenham in the top flight last term.
