Chris Sutton believes Liverpool FC need to sign a player capable of dominating the middle of the park.
The Reds are facing an uncertain future surrounding their promising Germany international Emre Can.
The 23-year-old has been linked with a potential move to Serie A giants Juventus, with his contract set to expire at the end of the season.
Liverpool FC captain Jordan Henderson has struggled with a string of injury problems throughout the campaign.
The Reds are set to sign Guinea international Naby Keita at the end of the season after Liverpool FC agreed a £48m transfer fee with RB Leipzig last summer.
However, former Chelsea striker Sutton believes Liverpool FC are in desperate need of a midfielder capable of showing some experience in the middle of the park.
“Liverpool missed a player who is capable of putting his foot on the ball and keeping the ball against Spurs,” Sutton told BBC Radio 5 Live. “That is what they lack.”
The Reds signed Netherlands international Virgil van Dijk in a club record £75m deal from Premier League rivals Southampton in the January transfer window.
Liverpool FC haven’t won a trophy since Jurgen Klopp took over the reins from Brendan Rodgers back in October 2015.
The Merseyside outfit were 5-0 winners against Porto in the Champions League round of 16 last week.
