Jurgen Klopp urged to make this Liverpool FC signing in the summer
Reporter Rory Smith believes Jurgen Klopp needs Liverpool FC to sign a defensive midfielder in order to replicate his Dortmund success at Anfield
Liverpool FC need to sign a defensive midfielder to help Jurgen Klopp replicate his success at Borussia Dortmund, reporter Rory Smith says.
The Reds became the first Premier League team to beat leaders Manchester City this season following a 4-3 win at Anfield in January.
However, Liverpool FC lost 1-0 to the Premier League’s basement club Swansea City in their next top-flight fixture.
The Merseyside outfit lost 3-2 to West Brom in the FA Cup fourth round at Anfield to see the Reds exit the competition prematurely.
Liverpool FC signed Netherlands defender Virgil van Dijk in a £75m transfer from Premier League rivals Southampton last month.
However, New York Times reporter Smith believes Liverpool FC really need to sign a defensive midfielder to give Klopp’s team greater balance.
“They need a holding midfielder,” Smith told BBC Radio 5 Live.
“Klopp’s Dortmund teams, they always had someone to dictate the game.
“He doesn’t have a player at Liverpool is someone who can think their way through a game like Nuri Sahin and Ilkay Gundogan.”
Liverpool FC are in fourth place in the Premier League table following a 3-0 win over Huddersfield Town on Tuesday night.
The Reds haven’t won the Premier League title but finished in second place in 2002, 2009 and 2014.
With Manchester City so far ahead, Liverpool FC’s best chance of silverware is the Champions League this term.
