Jose Mourinho told 24-year-old is holding Man United back
Kevin Kilbane believes Jose Mourinho should consider dropping Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku
Kevin Kilbane believes Manchester United would benefit from Romelu Lukaku’s omission from the starting line-up.
The Red Devils signed the Belgium international in a £75m deal from Premier League rivals Everton in the summer transfer window.
Lukaku scored 10 goals in his opening nine games in all competitions but his form has been inconsistent in the past few months.
The Belgium international’s overall performance has attracted criticism from some pundits following his big-money move.
Manchester United have lost two of their last three Premier League games following defeats at Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur.
Former Irish defender Kilbane believes Jose Mourinho needs to consider leaving Lukaku out of his Manchester United starting line-up.
“The basics are letting him down constantly. Sometimes he isn’t under pressure,” Kilbane told Irish radio station Newstalk.
“His goal record is brilliant. It was brilliant at Everton. With the attacking talent around with Martial, Lingard, Rashford and Sanchez.
“It’s paramount you have a striker who holds it up. I think it warrants taking him out of the side.”
The Red Devils haven’t won the Premier League title since 2013 when Sir Alex Ferguson was still in charge at Old Trafford.
Manchester United finished in sixth place in the table last term but won the Europa League and the League Cup under Mourinho.
Lukaku scored 25 times in 36 games in the Premier League last season, but the striker has netted 12 goals in 26 outings this term.
