Juan Mata heaped praise on his Manchester United team-mates for a “complete performance” in Manchester United’s 2-0 win against Huddersfield Town on Saturday afternoon.

The Red Devils lost 2-0 to top-six rivals Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley last week following Christian Eriksen’s opener after 11 seconds before Phil Jones’ own goal.

Summer signing Romelu Lukaku broke the deadlock against the Terriers to settle nerves at Old Trafford following their mid-week mishap at the home of English football.

Alexis Sanchez scored his first Premier League goal for Manchester United from the penalty spot in the second half after his move to Old Trafford from Arsenal in the January transfer window.

Manchester United moved to within 13 points of leaders Manchester City but perhaps more significantly extended their lead over top-four rivals Liverpool FC to five points.

Writing in his personal blog One Hour Behind, Mata spoke in glowing terms about Manchester United’s performance against Huddersfield.

“When you have a painful defeat like the one we had by mid-week in London, against Tottenham, all you want is for the next game to start as soon as possible.

“We needed to show the character of the team and to react in front of our fans in order to go back to the winning path.

“And so we did. I think it was a complete performance, one of those days when the game is under your control, and we managed to close it in time to add the three points.”

Manchester United will take on Rafael Benitez’s Newcastle United side at St James’ Park in their next Premier League game next weekend.

The Red Devils tied down Mata to an 18-month contract extension last week following the attacking midfielder’s fourth anniversary of his £37.1m move to Old Trafford from Chelsea.
