Juan Mata insists he wasn’t worried about his Manchester United future when Jose Mourinho was appointed despite receiving concerned phonecalls from family and friends.

The Spain international was named Chelsea FC’s player of the season in successive campaigns in the English capital in his opening 24 months at Stamford Bridge.

However, Mourinho’s return to the west London club resulted in Mata falling out of favour for Chelsea FC despite being held in high esteem by the Blues supporters.

Mata completed a £37.1m move to Manchester United from Chelsea FC in the 2013 January transfer window after Mourinho made it clear the Spanish playmaker wasn’t part of his plans.

The Portuguese coach was appointed as Louis van Gaal’s successor 30 months later to trigger speculation that Mata would be one of the first names out the door.

However, the World Cup winner has remained a regular member of the Manchester United team under Mourinho over the past 24 months.

But Mata lifted the lid on the concerns of his family and friends following Mourinho’s appointment.

“I faced it naturally,” Mata told Mundo Deportivo as quoted by the Daily Mirror
.
“It’s true I received calls from concerned friends and family but I knew that I didn’t have any personal problems with Mourinho at Chelsea.

“What hurt me is that they spread rumours and lies about what did not happen.”

Mata won the Europa League and the League Cup in his first season under Mourinho at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils midfielder was part of the Manchester United team that won the FA Cup under Van Gaal in 2016.
