Frank Lampard defends Jose Mourinho’s treatment of Man United record signing
The Chelsea FC legend backs Jose Mourinho's handing of Manchester United record signing Paul Pogba
Frank Lampard has defended Jose Mourinho’s treatment of Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba.
The France international has endured a difficult couple of months at Old Trafford following his return from a hamstring problem.
Pogba was caught on camera in a heated debate with Mourinho on the touchline before he was substituted in Manchester United’s 2-0 loss at Tottenham Hotspur last month.
The club record signing was omitted from starting line-up for the Red Devils’ 2-0 win over Huddersfield Town at Old Trafford before coming off the bench.
The French star was replaced midway through the second half minutes after Matt Ritchie’s winner in Manchester United’s 1-0 defeat at Newcastle United in their last Premier League game.
Mourinho was cryptic in his criticism of Pogba and the Manchester United record signing has been linked with a potential move to La Liga giants Real Madrid.
The £89m signing has struggled as part of a two-man midfield alongside Nemanja Matic in recent weeks.
However, former Chelsea FC midfielder Lampard believes Mourinho doesn’t deserve criticism for his treatment of Pogba.
“It is part of the personality of being a top manager that you make these kind of calls regardless,” Lampard told the Evening Standard.
“I understand why Mourinho took Pogba off a few times because he wasn’t happy with what he’s been doing lately on the defensive side.
“I’m a bit confused about all this talk regarding Pogba’s position. I understand Mourinho’s point when he explained he’s a midfielder that can play in two positions.”
Manchester United will welcome defending Premier League champions Chelsea FC in their next top-flight fixture at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.
The Red Devils are in second place and three points clear of Chelsea FC.
