Martin Keown names Man United player whose form is affecting Paul Pogba
The Arsenal legend believes Manchester United star Jesse Lingard is affecting Paul Pogba's performances
Martin Keown has claimed that the form of Jesse Lingard is hurting Manchester United record signing Paul Pogba.
The France international has attracted plenty of criticism in recent weeks given Manchester United’s inconsistent form.
Pogba was replaced in the second half of Manchester United’s 1-0 loss to Premier League strugglers Newcastle United.
The Frenchman was deemed partly responsible for Matt Richie’s winner after some poor marking from a set piece.
Pogba was dragged off in the second half of Manchester United’s 2-0 loss at Tottenham Hotspur last month before he started on the bench for the Red Devils’ 2-0 win over Huddersfield Town.
Lingard has been thriving in the Manchester United after a return of 12 goals and four assists in 32 games in all competitions this term.
Former Arsenal defender Keown believes Lingard’s performances have cast a shadow on Pogba.
“The Frenchman is at his best when he is in the final third hitting shots, going at defenders, being creative and making those buccaneering runs into the box,” Keown told the Daily Mail.
“At Juventus, he would often have a midfielder like Andrea Pirlo sitting deeper which allowed him to express himself higher up the pitch.
“He cannot do that when he is made to play deeper but the form of Lingard is keeping him from that more advanced position.
“People say Jose Mourinho does not develop young players but under his watch Lingard has been playing exceptionally well.”
Pogba moved to Manchester United in a £89m deal from Serie A giants Juventus in the 2016 summer transfer window.
Lingard, on the other hand, came through the Manchester United youth ranks.
