Rio Ferdinand sends Man United challenge to Romelu Lukaku
The Manchester United legend demands more from summer signing Romelu Lukaku
Rio Ferdinand has challenged Romelu Lukaku to produce big moments at Manchester United.
The Belgium international moved to the Red Devils in a £75m deal from Premier League rivals Everton in the summer transfer window.
Lukaku’s transfer was met with some skepeticism given his difficult spell at defending Premier League champions Chelsea FC.
However, the 24-year-old has scored 10 goals in nine games in all competitions to make a brilliant start to the 2017-18 season.
But the Belgian forward has struggled to find consistency in the Manchester United team over the past couple of months.
Lukaku was noticeably subdued in Manchester United’s goalless draw with La Liga giants Sevilla in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 clash on Wednesday night.
The summer signing has produced a respectable return of 20 goals in 38 games in all competitions but has failed to score against one of their top-six rivals this term.
Former Manchester United defender Ferdinand wants Lukaku to prove that he is able to influence big games for the Red Devils.
“He’s scored a lot of goals, but in the big games, big nights and big moments is where you want to see him produce,” Ferdinand told BT Sport. “That’s what he wants to do.”
Manchester United will take on Lukaku’s former club Chelsea FC in their next Premier League game at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.
The Red Devils are in second place in the Premier League table.
