Romelu Lukaku disagrees with Jose Mourinho about Man United target
The Manchester United striker believes the Red Devils can overhaul Man City in the title race
Romelu Lukaku believes Manchester United can still overhaul Premier League leaders Manchester City despite Jose Mourinho conceding defeat in the title race.
Manchester United lost 2-0 to top-six rivals Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley mid-week to fall 15 points adrift of Pep Guardiola’s side, who were 3-0 winners against West Brom.
The Red Devils returned to winning ways on Saturday afternoon after goals from Lukaku and January signing Alexis Sanchez sealed a 2-0 victory over Huddersfield Town at Old Trafford.
The Citizens could only manage a 1-1 draw with Burnley at Turf Moor to allow Manchester United to move to within 13 points of the Premier League leaders.
Manchester United have 12 games remaining in the 2017-18 season to catch Manchester City in the title race if the Red Devils are to deny the Citizens.
Mourinho has already ruled out Manchester City squandering the Premier League crown in the remaining months of the season.
However, Lukaku is refusing to concede defeat and disagrees with his manager that Manchester City can’t be reeled in.
“Of course it is good [Mourinho’s new contract], everything is stable,” Lukaku told Sky Sports. “He can continue building on what he is building now. Everybody knows how the manager works.
“If we do everything right until the end of the season, add in some reinforcements in the summer, we will be even stronger than we are now.
“I do not think the same as the manager. It [the league] is not done yet, we have to keep fighting.”
Manchester United signed Lukaku in a £75m deal from Premier League rivals Everton in the summer transfer window.
The Red Devils will take on Spanish side Sevilla in the Champions League round of 16 next month.
