Pat Nevin has warned Jose Mourinho’s detractors not to discount the manager’s ability to lead Manchester United to success.

The Red Devils boss guided the 20-time English champions to Europa League and League Cup glory in his first season in charge.

Manchester United made a bright start to the 2017-18 season but the Red Devils have been inconsistent since a surprise 2-1 loss to Huddersfield Town back in October.

The 20-time English champions have lost two of their last three Premier League games at Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur to leave the Red Devils 16 points adrift of leaders Manchester City.

Mourinho has won three Premier League titles during two spells in charge of Chelsea FC, but the Portuguese coach hasn’t won the Champions League since 2010 with Inter Milan.

Former Chelsea FC winger Nevin believes Mourinho is capable of reinventing his style of management to lead Manchester United back to the pinnacle of English football.

“Is he behind the curve? Maybe he needs to go and have a look at it,” Nevin told Irish radio station Newstalk.

“I’ve watched him in the past and thought he is behind the curve but it has gone full circle and he is OK again.

“He is quite capable with the group that he has got, if he works them the right way, they will be damn hard to beat.”

Mourinho took over the reins from Dutch coach Louis van Gaal in May 2016 after the Red Devils finished in fifth place.

Manchester United will take in Spanish side Sevilla in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 clash later this month.
