Phil Thompson: What Jose Mourinho is still trying to solve at Man United
The Liverpool FC legend believes Jose Mourinho is still unsure about his best team at Manchester United
Phil Thompson believes Jose Mourinho is still trying to work out his best team at Manchester United.
The Red Devils are in second place in the Premier League table but 16 points adrift of leaders Manchester City.
The 20-time English champions are a mere three points ahead of fourth-placed Chelsea FC in the table.
Manchester United will welcome the defending Premier League champions to Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.
Mourinho’s side battled to a goalless draw with La Liga giants Sevilla in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 clash in Spain on Wednesday night.
Manchester United have lost two of their last three Premier League games following defeats at Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United.
The Liverpool FC legend is convinced Mourinho hasn’t worked out his best starting XI at Manchester United almost 18 months into his reign.
“He’s the proverbial winner and I don’t think there are any problems with that,” Thompson told Sky Sports.
“However, while I know they won a few trophies last year, I still think he’s searching for his best team.
“He has the best goalkeeper in the world in David de Gea – the saves he pulled out midweek were astonishing – but you when consider he has made the third most amount of saves in the Premier League there’s clearly work to do.”
Manchester United finished in sixth place in the Premier League table last term but qualified for the Champions League thanks to a 2-0 win over Ajax in the Europa League final in Stockholm.
The Red Devils won the League Cup following a 3-2 win against Southampton at Wembley.
