Martin Keown: Man United star doesn’t look like £89m signing
The Arsenal legend believes Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba doesn't look like an £89m player in a deep-lying midfield role
Martin Keown says Paul Pogba doesn’t look like an £89m player when the Manchester United record signing has to play in a deep role.
The France international is coming under pressure from his Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho over the past weeks.
While the Portuguese coach hasn’t openly criticised his record signing, Mourinho’s decision to substitute Pogba in Manchester United’s losses to Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur point to the manager’s discord with the midfielder.
The French star has been inconsistent throughout the 2017-18 season after he initially made a brisk start to the Premier League campaign with two goals and two assists in his opening four top-flight appearances.
Pogba was tasked with starting in a deeper role at Manchester United on Sunday afternoon but the club record signing was anonymous.
Former Arsenal defender Keown warned Mourinho that Manchester United won’t get the best out of Pogba in a deeper role.
“Against Newcastle, Pogba wanted to show Mourinho that he could be a disciplined midfielder,” Keown told the Daily Mail.
“As our graphic shows, he touched the ball just once in the opposition penalty area and did not have a single shot or create a chance.
“But in that position Pogba looks anonymous.
“He does not look happy, does not flourish and there is no joy in his performance.
“He becomes just another player and we do not see the qualities that prompted United to buy him back for £89m.”
Manchester United finished in sixth place in the Premier League table last season.
The Red Devils won the Europa League and the League Cup in Pogba’s first season back at Old Trafford.
