Alan Shearer names two Man United players to blame for Romelu Lukaku struggles

Alan Shearer believes Ander Herrera and Nemanja Matic are to blame for Romelu Lukaku’s struggles at Manchester United this term.

The Belgium international moved to Manchester United in a £75m deal from Premier League rivals Everton in the summer transfer window.

The Red Devils striker scored 10 times in his opening nine games in a Manchester United shirt to temporarily silence his critics.

However, the 24-year-old netted 10 goals in his next 29 outings before Lukaku equalised in Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Chelsea FC at Old Trafford.

The Belgian forward had failed to find the net against Arsenal, Chelsea FC, Liverpool FC, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur before the visit of the Blues last weekend.

Lukaku ended that run with the leveller to cancel out Willian’s opening goal before the summer signing teed up Jesse Lingard to net a second-half winner.

Former Newcastle striker Shearer beleives Herrera and Matic haven’t provided Lukaku with sufficient service to bring the best out of the Manchester United striker.

“I do have a little bit of sympathy for him [Lukaku] because sometimes the way Man United play and the way Mourinho wants them to play with either Herrera or Matic,” Shearer told BBC Sport.

“Once the midfielder gets the ball not always are their first thought is “can I get the ball forward”, sometimes their first thought is ‘I’ll go to the left, or I’ll go back or I might even go to the right’.

“But, if it were to happen more often and look forward first and play that ball forward that makes it so much easier for a centre forward to cause problems.”

Manchester United hoisted themselves above Liverpool FC and into second place in the Premier League table last weekend.

The Red Devils will take on Sevilla in the second leg of their Champions League last-16 clash on Tuesday 13 March following a goalless draw in Spain earlier this month.
