Arsene Wenger replies when asked why Henrikh Mkhitaryan failed at Man United
Arsene Wenger discusses Manchester United's decision to sell Henrikh Mkhitaryan to Arsenal
Arsene Wenger has refused to be drawn on why Henrikh Mkhitaryan struggled to find consistent form under Jose Mourinho at Manchester United.
Mkhitaryan has been settling into life at his new club Arsenal in recent days after having signed for the Gunners as part of the same deal which saw Alexis Sanchez head to Old Trafford.
The Armenia international has already made a strong start to life at The Emirates and he notched up three assists for his team-mates in a brilliant 5-1 win over Everton in the Premier League on Sunday.
Mkhitaryan had fallen dramatically out of favour at Old Trafford under Mourinho this season and was left out of the starting line-up for many games towards the end of his stint at United.
However, Wenger has refused to wade into the debate about why Mkhitaryan had struggled to hold down a regular spot in the first team under Mourinho.
Speaking at a news conference at The Emirates on Saturday, Wenger said: “I am not responsible for Manchester’s decisions. I am responsible for Arsenal’s decisions – that is enough for me. They had their reasons. They have a world-class player in Sanchez and that obstructed him.
“He didn’t play there so I was not too surprised [he moved]. He was not playing at Manchester United and they got one more player who plays in a similar position with Sanchez.”
Mkhitaryan will be hoping to help Arsenal make it back to back wins in the Premier League on Saturday when the Gunners take on bitter local rivals Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley.
Spurs will head into that game on the back of their thrilling 2-2 draw with Liverpool FC at Anfield on Sunday.
