Romelu Lukaku: Why I rejected Chelsea FC to sign for Man United
Romelu Lukaku reveals that the chance to work with Jose Mourinho at Man United was too good to turn down
Romelu Lukaku has revealed that the chance to work with Jose Mourinho again was the main reason why he chose to move to Manchester United ahead of Chelsea last summer.
The Belgian signed for the Red Devils in a big-money move from Everton in July as Mourinho moved quickly to bolster his attacking options ahead of his second season in charge at the Old Trafford club.
The move came as a surprise to some because Lukaku had been heavily linked with a transfer back to Chelsea FC in the months leading up to the summer window last year.
Now, the striker has revealed that the chance to link up with Mourinho once again was the main factor that convinced him a move to Old Trafford was a good idea.
Asked why he chose to move to United ahead of Chelsea FC, Lukaku told ESPN Brasil: “Because before I had a dream of playing for the manager, Jose Mourinho.
“When I was little, at age of 11, I was at Chelsea. I was talking to my mum and dad that I wanted to play for him, because I really like his personality as a manager.
“He won many titles for Porto and Chelsea and now I’m very happy that I work with him.
“Because he’s a manager who knows what he needs to do to win the match and with him I learn a lot.”
Lukaku will be hoping to feature for Manchester United when the Red Devils take on Southampton in their next Premier League game next Sunday afternoon.
The striker has scored 12 goals and made five assists in 25 Premier League games for Manchester United so far this season.
The Red Devils are currently in second place in the Premier League table and 13 points behind leaders Manchester City.
