Rio Ferdinand slams Man United star after 2-0 loss to Tottenham
Rio Ferdinand was less-than impressed by Phil Jones' performance for Man United at Tottenham on Wednesday night
Rio Ferdinand criticised Phil Jones following the defender’s poor performance for Manchester United in their 2-0 loss to Tottenham on Wednesday night.
The England international was unable to prevent Christian Eriksen from scoring after just 11 seconds of the first half at Wembley.
And Jones was at fault once again later in the half when he scored an own-goal to put Spurs 2-0 up.
Manchester United struggled to gain a foothold in the game as they were thoroughly outplayed by the Lilywhites in north London.
And former Manchester United defender Ferdinand was clearly not impressed by what he saw from Jones in the 2-0 victory for Spurs at Wembley.
Speaking to BT Sport after the game, Ferdinand said of Jones’ display: “I think he had a hangover from the first bit.
“I can’t stress enough how important it is for a defender to make sure that they win their first tackle, their first header, their first challenge, to set the tone in the game.
“The tone was set by the first header he lost to Harry Kane. They went 1-0 down and they didn’t recover from that.”
Manchester United must now dust themselves down as they prepare to try and return to winning ways when they take on Huddersfield Town in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.
The Red Devils are second in the Premier League table but now 15 points behind leaders Manchester City.
Manchester United have not won the Premier League title since their famous final triumph under Sir Alex Ferguson back in 2013.
Jose Mourinho’s men will have to step their game up when they take on Sevilla in the last 16 of the Champions League later this month.
