Paul Scholes singles out Chris Smalling and Romelu Lukaku for special praise after Man United's 2-0 win over Huddersfield
Paul Scholes singled out Chris Smalling and Romelu Lukaku for special praise after Manchester United’s 2-0 win over Huddersfield Town in the FA Cup fifth round on Saturday.
Lukaku scored once in either half for the Red Devils to secure their place in the quarter-finals of the competition.
Jose Mourinho’s men will take on Brighton and Hove Albion for a place in the semi-finals at Wembley as they bid to win the cup competition this season.
Defender Smalling has come in for criticism for some of his recent below-par performances for the Red Devils.
And Lukaku has also failed to silence his doubters since his transfer to Old Trafford from Everton in the summer transfer window last year.
However, former Manchester United midfielder Scholes was impressed by the duo’s performances for the Red Devils on Saturday night as Mourinho’s men secured their progress.
Speaking to BT Sport after the game, Scholes said: “It wasn’t a great performance but it was a great win. Two performances in particular stood out for me.
“Chris Smalling has had a bit of a shaky time recently but I thought he was excellent at the back. Every cross that came in he headed away.
“And obviously Romelu Lukaku with his two breakaway goals. He was clinical with his finishing.”
Manchester United now turn their attentions towards their crunch Champions League clash against Sevilla in Spain on Wednesday night.
The Red Devils are currently in second place in the Premier League table as they chase Champions League qualification this season after finishing sixth last term.
