Graeme Souness explains his major problem with Man United midfielder
Graeme Souness reveals why he has been disappointed with Paul Pogba at Manchester United this season
Graeme Souness believes that Paul Pogba’s lack of defensive discipline is letting him down in a Manchester United shirt.
The French midfielder was criticised for the role he played in the build-up to Matt Ritchie’s goal for Newcastle United in the Magpies’ 1-0 victory at St James’ Park on Sunday afternoon in the Premier League.
Pogba was immediately substituted after the Red Devils conceded but Manchester United were unable to conjure an equaliser as they slumped to a disappointing defeat.
Former Liverpool FC star Souness is a huge admirer of Pogba’s athleticism and attacking prowess, but he feels that he drastically needs to improve his defensive awareness at Old Trafford.
Speaking to Sky Sports on Sunday, Souness said: “He’s got super individual ability. There’s much to admire about his technique on the ball. There’s much to admire about his general athleticism.
“My criticism is that he doesn’t understand the rule [of defending properly] when the opposition have the ball.
“I don’t see any changes from the day he arrived to where we are now in that sense.”
Pogba will be hoping to help Manchester United return to winning ways on Saturday evening when they take on Huddersfield Town in the fifth round of the FA Cup.
The Red Devils are currently in second place in the Premier League table but only two points ahead of third-placed Liverpool FC as the race for a top-four finish in the top flight hots up.
Manchester United finished in sixth place in the Premier League table last season and won both the Europa League and League Cup under Jose Mourinho.
