Paul Scholes sends warning to Man United ahead of Sevilla clash
Paul Scholes discusses Manchester United's problems at the back this season under Jose Mourinho
Paul Scholes believes that Manchester United will have to step up their defensive performance against Sevilla in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
The Red Devils are preparing to travel to Spain for the first leg of their last 16 tie against the La Liga side as they bid to try and make it through to the quarter-finals of Europe’s elite club competition.
Manchester United have been in stuttering form in the Premier League in recent weeks and have lost two of their last three games in the top flight under Jose Mourinho.
Mourinho’s men did book their place in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup on Saturday night with a 2-0 win over Huddersfield Town as they go for glory in the cup competitions.
However, former Manchester United midfielder Scholes feels that the Red Devils’ problems in recent weeks stem from some unconvincing performances at the back from Mourinho’s men.
Speaking to BT Sport on Saturday night, Scholes said: “They’ve looked very nervous.
“You see this Tottenham game, was it 10 seconds when they scored?
“This is what they’ve been like, Jones and Smalling, anything around them they have been very nervous.
“When teams sit off them they’re fine, they’ve got no problem, they can pass a ball to each other but as soon as they play against quality strikers, they’re all over the place.”
Manchester United are currently in second place in the Premier League table but third-placed Liverpool FC are only two points behind them as the race for the top four places hots up.
The Red Devils finished sixth but won both the Europa League and League Cup last term.
