Rio Ferdinand believes that Manchester United completed their job as required following their goalless draw with Sevilla in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

The Red Devils played out an uninspiring stalemate in Spain in the first leg of their last 16 clash as they head back to Old Trafford for the return leg next month as the favourites to progress.

Jose Mourinho will be hoping to guide the Red Devils into the quarter-finals of Europe’s elite club competition when they host the La Liga outfit at Old Trafford in the return game on 13 March.

And former Manchester United defender Ferdinand praised the Red Devils for doing a professional job, highlighting David De Gea’s display as one of the key factors in the result.

Speaking to BT Sport after the game, Ferdinand said: “They’ll go into the next game with confidence.

“They’ll get on the plane saying job well done – a clean sheet away from home.

“That’s their 23rd clean sheet this season and they have a lot to thank David De Gea for. Job done today.”

Manchester United will now switch their attentions back to Premier League affairs and their crunch clash against Chelsea FC at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.

Mourinho’s men are currently in second place in the Premier League table as they chase a top-four finish in Mourinho’s second campaign in charge.

Manchester United finished sixth in the Premier League and won both the Europa League and League Cup last season.
