Ryan Giggs believes that Paul Pogba is at his best when he is given freedom alongside Ander Herrera and Nemanja Matic in a midfield three for Manchester United.

The France international has been one of the first names on the Manchester United team sheet since completing his move back to Old Trafford from Juventus back in the summer of 2016.

However, Pogba was dropped to the bench by Jose Mourinho for Saturday’s 2-0 win over Huddersfield, with the Red Devils boss clearly not impressed by his performance in the 2-0 loss to Tottenham last week.

Pogba came on as a second half substitute against Huddersfield and helped the Red Devils claim the three points in the Premier League clash.

There has been much debate about Pogba’s best position for Manchester United – and former Red Devils midfielder Giggs reckons that he has worked out which option suits the Frenchman best.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Giggs said: “I would say the forward line is as good as Manchester City’s, but the difference is the way of playing, with Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva behind consistently finding the front three for City.

“United have Paul Pogba who could potentially be as good as them, but then Nemanja Matic is more defensive, so it is just that creative area where City have got the upper hand.

“One of the best games Pogba had was the Everton game [2-0 win on January 1], when he was on the left of Matic – in a similar position to the one he played at Juventus – and Ander Herrera was on the right.

“I think that position where he’s on the left of a midfield three is where he’s at his best. He’s a brilliant crosser of the ball and I don’t think he’s as effective when he’s having to do more defensive work in central areas.

“I would like to see him in a 4-3-3 with Matic sitting, Herrera to the right and Pogba to the left, with a selection of the front three thriving off more creativity behind them.”

Pogba will be hoping to feature for Manchester United when the Red Devils return to Premier League action on Sunday with a trip to St James’ Park to take on Newcastle United.

The Red Devils are currently in second place in the Premier League table and 13 points behind leaders Manchester City.
