Jose Mourinho names position where Man United will need top summer signing
The Manchester United manager admits the Red Devils will need to sign a midfielder to replace Michael Carrick in the summer
Jose Mourinho believes Manchester United will need to secure a top signing to replace Michael Carrick.
The 36-year-old is set to retire at the end of the 2017-18 season and take up a role as part of Mourinho’s coaching staff at Old Trafford.
Carrick has only made two starts in all competitions in the current campaign following an injury-ravaged season for the veteran so far.
The former England international has been a key part of Manchester United’s success over the past decade or so after Sir Alex Ferguson signed the midfielder from Tottenham Hotspur in 2006.
The ex-West Ham youth graduate won five Premier League titles, the Champions League, three League Cup and the FA Cup during his 12-year career at the Red Devils.
Belgian midfielder Marouane Fellaini has less than six months remaining on his current deal and the 30-year-old could leave for nothing at the end of the season.
Mourinho pointed out that Manchester United will need some reinforcements in midfield ahead of the 2018-19 Premier League campaign.
“I think in attack it’s very difficult for us to improve. Where are we going to get a better combination of players than we have?” Mourinho told the Manchester Evening News.
“We cannot buy Messi, we cannot buy Crsitiano. These are the best players of the last decade. Where can we get better players than Mata, Martial, Lingard, Rashford, Sanchez, Lukaku? So, in attack, we have an amazing group of players.
“In midfield Michael Carrick will be not the No.16. Who will have Michael Carrick in his shirt next season, so we lose a player. It’s there in midfield where we need to improve but to get a player to compensate the situation of Michael.
“If Fellaini leaves we have two gaps there so let’s see what happens. But in relation to Fellaini the good thing is he wants to stay with us and we would like him to stay with us. To sign a contract the person must be happy and let’s see.”
Manchester United are in second place in the Premier League table but a long way behind runaway leaders Manchester City.
The Red Devils signed Alexis Sanchez in a swap deal from Arsenal in the January transfer window as Henrikh Mkhitaryan moved to north London.
