The Red Devils are bound to be linked with a host of players in the coming weeks and months as the summer window draws nearer and Mourinho looks to assemble a squad capable of winning the Premier League title next season.
Michael Carrick is set to retire at the end of the season and Maroune Fellaini’s future at Old Trafford remains up in the air.
And the Red Devils boss has now confirmed that he will try and bring in another midfielder in the summer transfer window as he looks to set his team up for success next season.
Mourinho is quoted as saying by Sky Sports: “We need to sign a midfield player because we are going to lose Michael Carrick.
“Of course we need balance in the team and I said that months ago. You can accuse me of many things but you cannot say I lie to you.
“When I don’t want to say things, I don’t say, but I don’t take you in other directions. So I told you we don’t want to sign any strikers or wingers, and yes we are looking for a midfield player.”
Manchester United made arguably the biggest signing of the January transfer window when they completed a deal to land Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal.
The same deal saw Henrikh Mkhitaryan head to the Gunners after the Armenia playmaker fell out of favour under Mourinho this season.
Manchester United have been consistently spending big in the transfer windows since Mourinho’s arrival, with the Red Devils having splashed the cash on the likes of Paul Pogba, Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic since his appointment in May 2016.
