Ex-defender identifies player Man United need to sign in summer
The Irish defender believes Manchester United need to sign a new centre-half in the summer transfer window
Manchester United are likely to go out and sign another top centre-half in the summer transfer window, according to Kenny Cunningham.
The Red Devils signed Sweden international Victor Lindelof in a £30m deal from Portuguese giants Benfica last summer.
However, the 22-year-old has struggled to adapt to the Premier League following his big-money move to Old Trafford.
Ivory Coast international Eric Bailly has struggled with injury problems since his £30m move to Manchester United from Villarreal.
Phil Jones and Chris Smalling were heavily criticised for a poor performance in Manchester United’s 1-0 loss to Newcastle United last weekend.
Former Irish defender Cunningham has admitted that he wouldn’t be surprised to see the Red Devils sign a top centre-half at the end of the season.
“In the summer, it wouldn’t surprise me if they go and buy big again in terms of a top class centre-half,” Cunningham told Irish radio station Newstalk. “He tried to do that last summer already.”
Manchester United finished in sixth place in the Premier League table last term but won the Europa League and the League Cup in their first season under Mourinho.
Manchester United are in second place in the Premier League table but only two points ahead of Liverpool FC in third spot.
