Man United face competition from Real Madrid to sign proven Premier League star – report
Manchester United and Chelsea FC will face competition from Real Madrid for defender Toby Alderweireld this summer, say reports
Manchester United are likely to face competition from Real Madrid for the signature of Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld this summer, according to reports in the British media.
The Daily Mirror claims that Real Madrid are ready to “lead” the chase for the Belgian defender as they look to bolster their defensive options at the end of the season.
The same report says that Manchester United, Chelsea FC, and Manchester City are among the other clubs interested in signing the defender this summer from Spurs.
The story says that Real Madrid have been “alerted” by the 28-year-old’s current contract stand-off with Tottenham Hotspur and that the Spanish giants could make a swoop in the summer.
However, despite Real Madrid’s apparent interest in Alderweireld, Manchester United and Chelsea FC are said to be “closely” monitoring developments as the speculation about his future continues.
Alderweireld’s current contract at Spurs is set to expire in the summer of 2019, but the north London side have the option to extend by another year to 2020.
However, it is claimed in the same report that the defender’s contract also contains a £25m release clause which comes into effect next summer, meaning that the Lilywhites may choose to sell this summer if they cannot convince him to sign a new deal.
