Mark Lawrenson states his prediction for Newcastle v Man United
The former Liverpool FC defender doesn't expect Manchester United to have any problems against Newcastle at St James' Park on Sunday
Mark Lawrenson doesn’t anticipate Manchester United encountering any problems against Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Sunday afternoon.
The Red Devils will be looking to record successive Premier League victories to open up a bigger gap between themselves and third-placed Liverpool FC.
Manchester United were 2-0 winners against promoted side Huddersfield Town in the Premier League at Old Trafford last weekend.
The 20-time English champions lost 2-0 to top-six rivals Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley back in January in their last fixture on the road.
Newcastle, on the other hand, are winless in their last four Premier League games under former Chelsea FC and Liverpool FC manager Rafael Benitez.
The Magpies are a mere point above the relegation zone and have only netted 24 times in 26 games in the Premier League this term.
Former Liverpool FC defender Lawrenson is backing Manchester United to beat Newcastle at St James’ Park on Sunday.
“It is hard to see Newcastle offering much more of a threat against a Manchester United side who easily saw off Huddersfield last weekend,” Lawrenson told BBC Sport.
“Islam Slimani could make his debut and should give Newcastle more of a focal point in attack but I just think we might see a classic Rafa Benitez performance at home against a top-six team – which is a bit like parking 10 buses, not just one.”
Manchester United are in second place in the Premier League table but 13 points adrift of Manchester City.
The Red Devils will take on La Liga giants Sevilla in the Champions League round of 16 later this month.
The 20-time English champions are seven points ahead of fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur in pursuit of a Champions League spot.
