Paul Merson is backing Manchester United to continue their march towards a top-four finish in the Premier League by beating Newcastle United 2-0 on Sunday afternoon.

The Red Devils head into the game after having had a free week to prepare following their 2-0 victory over Huddersfield Town at Old Trafford last weekend.

Manchester United are currently in second place in the Premier League table as they try to get as close to Manchester City in the race for the Premier League title as possible.

Jose Mourinho’s men are 13 points behind their bitter local rivals and although it looks unlikely that they will be able to catch them in the race for the title, the Portuguese coach will be keen for his side to finish the season as strongly as possible.

And former Arsenal star Merson is fully expecting to see the Red Devils claim all three points on Sunday afternoon at St James’ Park.

Writing in his column for Sky Sports, Merson said: “Manchester United are just efficient, aren’t they?

“They played a weakened Huddersfield at home and fell over the line – you could not come off that pitch and say they could have won by nine, but they were efficient.

“Newcastle have got a chance, because Manchester United won’t blow you away. Rafa Benitez is one of the best managers at setting teams up not to lose games, and with players like Jamaal Lascelles at set-plays, you never know.”

Manchester United have not won the Premier League title since Sir Alex Ferguson’s final campaign in charge at Old Trafford in 2013.

The Red Devils will take on Sevilla in the last 16 of the Champions League later this month.
