Phil Thompson has admitted that he believes Pep Guardiola would be a big success at Liverpool FC.

The Spanish coach took over the reins at Manchester City at the start of the 2016-17 season following previous stints in charge of Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

The Citizens failed to win a trophy in Guardiola’s first season in charge but Manchester City did finish in third place in the Premier League table.

However, the Eastlands outfit have made significant progress in the current campaign and are sitting 16 points clear at the top of the Premier League.

Manchester City were 4-0 winners against Swiss side Basel in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 clash earlier this month to all but qualify for the last eight.

The Citizens did suffer a shock 1-0 loss to League One side Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium in the FA Cup fifth round on Monday night.

Manchester City have the chance to win a first trophy under Guardiola against Arsenal in the League Cup final at Wembley on Sunday.

Klopp is still waiting to win his silverware as Liverpool FC boss following losses to Manchester City and Sevilla in the League Cup and Europa League finals in 2016.

While Thompson was keen to stress that he is happy with Klopp, the Liverpool FC legend names Guardiola as the one manager that he would be intrigued to see in charge of his beloved Reds side.

“If you think about box ticking he covers them all,” Thompson told Sky Sports.

“People might say he’s not defensive minded but he identifies the right defenders to suit his system and he sorted out the full-backs. He’s got that value that everybody wants – winning but with a bit of style.”
