Steven Gerrard hailed Mohamed Salah’s moment of brilliance at Porto to give Liverpool FC the springboard to secure a resounding 5-0 win in their Champions League last-16 tie in Portugal on Wednesday night.

The Egypt international has been in scintillating form in the Premier League this season and Salah warmed up for the return of the Champions League with three goals in his last two top-flight outings.

The African forward netted six goals in eight games to help Liverpool FC top their group and reach the knockout stage of the competition.

Sadio Mane broke the deadlock in the 25th minute when his low finish crept under Porto goalkeeper Jose Sa with Spanish legend Iker Casillas on the bench.

Salah reacted quickest when James Milner’s shot hit the woodwork to juggle the ball in the air before slotting past Sa to make it 2-0.

Former Liverpool FC captain Gerrard was full of praise for the summer signing after his superb goal put the Reds in control of the Champions League clash.

“I think they were excellent,” Gerrard told BT Sport.

“They had too much aggression for Porto and looked like they could score every time they go forward. We’ve seen a moment of brilliance from Mo Salah for the second goal, it was absolutely brilliant.”

Mane completed his hat-trick in the second half, while Firmino scored his 20th goal of the season in all competition to wrap up a 5-0 win.

Liverpool FC are in third place in the Premier League table and two points adrift of second-placed Manchester United.

The Reds are looking to win the competition for the first time since 2005 when Liverpool FC came from behind to beat AC Milan on penalties.
