Roy Keane identifies the player undermining Man United defence
The Man United legend believes the Red Devils can ill-afford to rely on Ashely Young at the back
Roy Keane believes Manchester United will continue to struggle at the back if Ashley Young is starting at left-back.
The England international has been used as a full-back since Jose Mourinho took over the reins of the 20-time English champions back in May 2016.
The Portuguese coach has used Luke Shaw sparingly throughout his tenure so far, resulting in Young getting a lot of game time at left-back.
The 32-year-old has scored two goals and has made three assists in 20 appearances in the Premier League in the current campaign.
Young started two of Manchester United’s last three Premier League games as he struggled in a 2-0 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur and a 1-0 loss to Newcastle United.
Former Manchester United captain Keane believes Young is holding Manchester United back under Mourinho.
“They haven’t sorted out the defensive problems they have had over the last few years and that will continue,” Keane told ITV Sport. “The two centre-halves need to do better.
“I’ve always thought with Ashley Young in your back four, you are going to struggle.”
The Red Devils finished in sixth place in the Premier League table last term to miss out on a Champions League spot.
However, Manchester United managed to rescue their 2016-17 season with a 2-0 win over Ajax in the Europa League to secure their place in Europe’s premier club competition.
The 20-time English champions got their hands on the League Cup trophy last term thanks to a 3-2 victory over Southampton in the final at Wembley.
