Arsenal have told Jack Wilshere that he will have to take a 25 per cent pay cut if he is to sign a new contract with the Gunners, according to reports in the British media.

The Sun is reporting that Arsenal are counting the cost of potentially missing out on Champions League football for the second season running.

Arsenal are currently in sixth place in the Premier League table and look unlikely to be able to break back into the top four before the season is out.

Their last remaining hope of securing Champions League football for next season will be winning the Europa League this term, with the Gunners set to take on CSKA Moscow in the last eight.

Missing out on Champions League football is reported to be set to cost Arsenal around £29m in lost revenue per season.

According to the same story, Arsenal are counting the costs of an inflated wage bill, with Mesut Ozil’s new contract plus the signings of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Alexandre Lacazette having increased their outgoings considerably.

As things stand, the same article says that Arsenal are not prepared to increase the £90,000 a week offer of a new contract to Wilshere, 26.

Wilshere is out of contract in the summer, meaning that he could be available on a free transfer at the end of the season.
