The Gunners have been coming in for some intense criticism in recent weeks following a disappointing run of results for Arsene Wenger’s side.
The north Londoners were comprehensively beaten 3-0 by Manchester City in the League Cup final at Wembley last weekend, before suffering another 3-0 loss to the Citizens at The Emirates, this time in the Premier League on Thursday night.
Arsenal look increasingly like they are going to miss out on a top-four finish this season, with the north London side currently sixth in the Premier League and way off the pace in the race for Champions League qualification.
And Thompson feels that there is a clear lack of leaders in the Arsenal team, something which he thinks must be addressed in the summer transfer window.
Speaking to Sky Sports News, Liverpool FC legend Thompson said: “You can go through the team and pick out the weaknesses, but they need that somebody who will not let the team give in when their heads drop because they are a soft touch.
“This isn’t just in the wake of [the League Cup final on] Sunday, but it has been the case for a number of years.
“They need somebody who will roll their sleeves up and lead the team in the tough times.”
Arsenal are currently preparing for their Premier League trip to Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday afternoon.
The Gunners have not won the Premier League title since their famous unbeaten triumph in the 2003-04 campaign, and they ended up in fifth place in the table last term.
